Event Rentals FAQs

Does the Somerville Museum rent space for events?

Yes! However, our primary mission is as an exhibition space so all rental opportunities are planned around exhibitions and scheduled museum events.

What happens if my event falls during an exhibition?

If your event is approved to happen during the time of an exhibition (outside of open hours) then expect that any artwork/artifacts from the exhibition will remain on the exterior walls of the gallery space and any moveable interior walls and pedestals will moved to the side. No additional artwork or items can be hung in the space and any private event should be respectful of the current exhibition items.

Which spaces are available for rent?

At the moment, the Pisa Gallery (our Main Gallery) is available for rent along with the new Multi-Purpose Room.

How many guests can I have?

Please note the max capacity for each space. We’re limited by fire code and prioritize safety. The max capacity listed may change for seated events.

May I see the location first?

Yes, please fill out the provided form and we’ll arrange a visit.

Does the Museum provide chairs and tables?

The museum has a few tables for use, but all other materials must be provided by the renter.

What about electricity?

The Pisa Gallery has a few outlets in the space, but if a higher level of electricity is needed we’ll encourage you to rent a power generator.

Does the museum cater?

No. We do not have a catering kitchen. Any food that is brought in must following the following rules:

  • Menu MUST be approved by the Executive Director

    • No red/brown/dark sauces or drinks allowed; the space has historic objects and we don’t allow any drinks or food that could potentially stain objects and/or artwork that might be installed.

  • All food must come from a certified caterer or store

  • Any alcohol served must be served by a TIPS certified bartender

  • Additional food and drink requirements are included in rental contract

Are there restrooms?

Yes, the museum has two recently renovated, ADA compliant, gender-neutral restrooms.

Is there parking?

No, the museum has no dedicated parking. Please review the visit page for more details.

Is there internet service?

Yes, the museum has internet service that is available to renters.

Can I rent the museum for a pop-up exhibition?

No, all public exhibitions must go through our Community Curator program. The rental opportunities are reserved for private events. If you’d like to collaborate with us on renting the space for a public event please contact us at info@somervillemuseum.org.

Is the historic 1792 Bulfinch Staircase available for use during the rental?

The iconic staircase that graces the Pisa Gallery is a protected historic item prohibited from use by the public. It can’t be decorated in anyway and use is restricted. Small musical groups with minimal musicians, bride/groom may be able to use the staircase at the approval and supervision of staff.
