New England Mosaic Society

February 22 through April 7, 2018

The Somerville Museum was pleased to present a group exhibition of contemporary mosaic works featuring the New England Mosaic Society (NEMS) artists. The Mosaic Exhibition ran from February 22 –April 7, 2018 with an opening reception on Sunday February 25, 2018 from 1:00-3:00 pm

The exhibition featured the work of 60 artists from the six New England states. In addition, Cynthia FisherIsabel Margolin, and Lisa Houck, three internationally known mosaic artists from New England, showed their work in an Invitational Exhibit. The show also included a Salon, where NEMS members exhibited and sold their small mosaics.

“You’ll see a wide variety of mosaic techniques and styles at this mosaic art exhibition,” said exhibit co-chairs, Karen Edlund and Cynthia Fisher. Contemporary mosaicists practiced techniques dating back to the Romans and Greeks, but used a wide variety modern materials (gems, jewelry, shells, found objects, china, glass tiles, smalti, stained glass, pebbles) to create contemporary designs.

A catalog was available for purchase with full-color images of all the mosaics in the exhibition.
