***NOTE: Since the cyanotype process needs sunlight to be successful, this event has been rescheduled to Sunday, October 29***
As part of our Community Curator exhibition, BLUE: The Celebration of a Color by Martha Friend, we present this workshop by local artist, Karen Molloy. Make your own cyanotype!
Cyanotype, or “sun printing” is a vintage hand-applied method of photo printing, dating from the 1840s. You can create wonderful Prussian blue color images by simply exposing sensitized paper or fabric to the UV light of the sun for a few minutes and rinsing them in water. In this hands-on workshop you will learn the expressive possibilities of making cyanotypes using sensitized paper or fabric, the sun, water, and your own inspiration.
Learn how to print on paper and/or fabric treated with a light sensitive solution, expose your prints in the sunlight, rinse them in water to develop the images, and then dry them. Pre-treated paper and cotton fabric, and the plexiglass with cardboard backing for exposing the prints in the sunlight, will be provided.
To experiment with image-making for your cyanotype prints, bring photo/digital negatives, botanicals, lace, cut-out shapes, and other 2D flat materials that will fit easily on an 8.5” x 11” sheet. More information will be sent after you register.
Admission: $25; Somerville Museum members enjoy a discounted admission of $20 (use code CYANMEMBER). Admission includes paper and/or fabric and the use of supplied plexiglass and cardboard carriers for exposure in the sun. An additional resource list will be sent by the instructor prior to the workshop.
