Sweet City: A History of Candy Manufacturing in Somerville, Cambridge, and Boston

Join us for a virtual evening about the history of sweets by beloved confectioner Jeremy Spindler of Spindler Confections.

This event is part of our Bittersweet exhibition's Chocolate Stories Salon series and is co-sponsored by our friends and partners at Historic Somerville.

Join chocolatier Jeremy Spindler of Spindler Confections for a look at the fascinating candy history of the Boston metro area. You've likely heard of NECCO, but in its heyday the Boston area was home to over 140 factories producing a wide variety of chocolates & candies. Due to a variety of factors none of these companies exist anymore. However, there are still remnants of this once thriving industry sprinkled about the city.

Admission: This is a virtual event via zoom. While admission is free donations are welcome and benefit the operations of the Somerville Museum.

This event will also be recorded and published on our website.

A special thanks to Taza Chocolate for their very generous in-kind chocolate donation. This exhibition wouldn’t be possible without their support.

This program is made possible by a grant from Mass Humanities, which provided funding through the National Endowment for the Humanities via the American Rescue Plan.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Somerville Arts Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
