Malvern Avenue Past and Present

Discovering a Neighborhood: Malvern Avenue Past and Present (2000), came about when a visual artist's paintings of front stoops and backyards displayed during a block party led neighbors to investigate how their streets were settled by black Pullman porters, its past as a Civil War training camp, and the surprising connections between the two.

In conjunction with the exhibit of documentary materials including family photo albums and Civil War artifacts, artists Martha Friend, Sean Greene, and Matthew Rashon were commissioned to create original art that reflected on the intersection of neighborhood, family and architecture in relation to the history of Malvern Avenue.
