Work progressed this week with finalizing the phone line locations, masonry, and roof work. These are all necessary steps in the project but are less exciting visually. Instead, we want to use this week’s post as a reminder of the why, what, and who of the project.
WHY: In the Fall of 2011, the Museum Board undertook a survey of the building and grounds to determine what needed to be done to bring the Museum into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). From that information, the Museum’s architect, Richard Graf, created plans for a new entryway on Westwood Road that included a wheelchair lift and attractive portico. This design was universally admired; however, it did not meet the Massachusetts Architectural Access Board (MAAB) requirements for making the Museum fully accessible. In 2014, the MAAB directed the Trustees to make all three floors of the building accessible to the public, including volunteers (The Museum was aided by over 80 volunteers last year). To allow full access to all requires an elevator.
WHAT: This project includes many upgrades besides the obvious addition of the elevator. As part of the Access for All & More project the following items will also be included: the historic Bulfinch staircase will be restored, we’ll have new ADA, gender neutral bathrooms, and access to collections will be improved - to name a few.
WHO: Who will benefit from this project? The simple answer is everyone. Obviously, all the ADA upgrades will allow for those who haven’t been able to physically enjoy the Museum to fully access all we have to offer. It is because of these ADA upgrades that we will be able to apply for more grant money that will strengthen our exhibitions and programming. So, in short, everyone benefits from this project.
We are so close to the finish line! The Access for All & More fundraising goal is $2.25 million. To date, we’ve raised $2.10 million. With the construction expected to be complete by the end of the year, we need your help now more than ever. Every dollar counts! Donating to the campaign is easy. You can donate online with the button below or send a check to the Somerville Museum and include “Access for All & More” in the memo line. A check donation form is available for your convenience.
Thank you!
