Ding! Ding! Ding! Jump on one or both of the spring trolley tours of Somerville history. In April tours will feature Revolutionary history (alongside modern life) and in May, Industrial History. These ticketed tours will bring historians of all ages on a loop through town, guided by experts in Somerville history narrating the stories of what you can see and what is gone but not forgotten. Each tour is under 90 minutes, with a short stop to get off and see the history for yourselves.
The Revolutionary Line trolley tour follows the lesser-known route of Paul Revere’s ride, tracing his path from Charlestown through Somerville and Medford. Along the way, it highlights the overlapping borders and histories of these towns, including the pivotal moment on April 18, 1775, when Revere altered his course in Somerville after spotting two British soldiers at a well-known landmark.
The Assembly Line trolley tour delves into Somerville’s industrial past, which closely parallels the city’s history of immigration. Discover why Union Square was once called Sandpit Square, how brickmaking became a vital industry, and how familiar childhood favorites like the Nerf Ball and Marshmallow Fluff got their start in Somerville.
