Welcome Anna Celestrya-Carr
Anna-Celestrya-Carr is delighted to join the Somerville Museum as the new Historic Events Manager. With over a decade of experience as a Cultural Arts Professional dedicated to amplifying Indigenous narratives through art and performance, Anna-Celestrya brings unique expertise in event coordination, media production, and cross-cultural storytelling in public and community settings.
Anna-Celestrya Carr is a multidisciplinary artist, filmmaker, writer, dancer, and speaker from the Red River Métis. As an artist, she is best known for the Men's Banner Project; this project was created in response to the issue of violence against women and the thousands of missing and murdered Indigenous women in North America. Her films include, Dreamcatcher (2011), a short dramatic fantasy rooted in Indigenous mythology, Tik-A-Lee-Kick (2012), a poignant and candid exploration of a young Indigenous woman's perspective on the Little People, and "Wiigiwaam," is a visual project that follows an Indigenous artist and her family constructing a wigwam using non-traditional materials. Wiigiwaam was showcased at the Boston International Film Festival and was a finalist at the Wales International Film Festival.She has worked for the National Film Board of Canada and the Urban Shaman Art Gallery. In 2009, she was awarded the Sybil Shack Human Rights Youth Award, and in 2012, she received the YMCA-YWCA Women of Distinction Award in Public Awareness and Communications for her work.
Anna-Celestrya has a special fondness for New England history, literature, and art. She believes that museums play a vital role in community engagement and lifelong learning. She is eager to help create meaningful experiences for everyone who visits. The Museum's commitment to preserving the past, reflecting the present, and shaping the future of the Somerville community resonates deeply with her personal and professional values. She is excited to bring her skills to the team and contribute to initiatives that honor and celebrate cultural education while engaging the community.
